Day 109- People Watching in Phnom Penh

The city we live in, Phnom Penh, (pen-om pen) is the capital city of Cambodia. People from all over the world live in this city. Missionary's, Humanitarians, Embassy people, Business people, and some strange folk who simply moved here in need of change. There are 30 nations represented just in my church alone here.

I confess, there was a time I actually thought all white people came from America.

They don't, in case you thought that too.

And you should probably never admit you thought that.

After living here almost 4 months now, and studying other foreigners obsessively; I successfully came up with ways to figure out where people are from without actually speaking to them.

And now I will share my tricks with you.

In case you end up in a strange land and need to differentiate one white person or asian from another.

1. If a person is white, dressed well and seems a bit snobby, they are probably French.

2. If you see a white person at the cafe, with a down to earth personality, that looks like they're from California but their clothes and hair style is even a bit hipper than a Californians, guaranteed they're from New Zealand.

3. If a person is white, with a round face, and a dorky little sway when they walk, they're Australian.

4. If a person laughs and smiles a lot and acts like they know everything, they're American.

5. If a white person has darker hair, is smoking and scowling, they're Greek.

6. If you see a group of Asians and they are very clean cut and wearing matching t-shirts, they're from Taiwan. And they are probably very nice. And probably on a mission trip.

7. If you see another group of Asians and they are also very clean cut but dressed a bit cooler, and they always seem a but confused about where they are going or where they're supposed to be, they're from Korea.

8. A white person, dressed in very neutral tones like khaki, wearing no make-up is from Switzerland.

And there you have it! Happy People Watching!

Love,
E

  1. Just wait till you try to sort out a group of Asians together - Which are Chinese, Vietnamese, Laotian, Japanese, Korean? Which Chinese are from the mainland and which are from Hong Kong or Singapore? Clues: Check out the haircuts, the clothes, the cute look-alike hats that the whole group is wearing, the shorts-socks-shoe combination. Last but not least, did he spit on the street? But you'll NEVER figure out their ages. Asians are ageless.
